    .mobi domain name

For domainers and website owners alike, .mobi TLD was seen as one of the biggest domain name innovation failure of all times. The major factor leading to .mobi’s non-acceptance and criticism was its alleged non-conformity to principles of device independence. There was a lot of argument that content tailored to fit mobile devices could be achieved in other ways than to create a XHTML-MP site, as required by .mobi. Thus, this extension was lost into oblivion as website owner’s implemented HTTP content negotiation, cascading style sheets and special mobile browser plug-ins to make their websites compatible with mobile devices.

Along came the advent of mobile internet…

During the initial launch of .mobi, mobile internet was still in its infancy. mTLD Top Level Domain Ltd (the official management company of .mobi) saw this as an opportune time to capitalize on the steady growth of this industry, and thus, .mobi TLD was launched to public on September 26th, 2006. This extension gained a fine standing amongst high profile companies, such as, Google, Microsoft, Nokia, Samsung, Vodafone; to name a few. Even so, somehow the extension did not suit the general public preference, thus signaling the beginning of its end.
2009 has seen a distinct lean towards mobile web. Beginning with iPod, the mobile internet vehemence has been given a virtual kick upwards, and now Nokia and HTC have followed suit to produce fully optimized web internet devices.

So what has the amplification of mobile web got to do with .mobi?

Big companies, such as the BBC, have raced to bring the mobile friendly version of their websites online. On the same context, there have been various plug-ins, code changes and enhancements made to existing sites to conform to the mobile version. WordPress Mobile Edition, for instance, is a plug-in designed to convert an existing WordPress site into a mobile version. However, this conversion of sites necessarily does not optimize it for the mobile web. Sites with complex designs, such as forum boards, still have a difficult time adapting to a mobile friendly version.
The .mobi TLD, therefore, has simplified things for those website owners thinking of going mobile. Since any .mobi site has to be optimized to be viewable on mobile device, there is no additional code changes needed to turn your website into a mobile website. Instant Mobilizer, a product from .mobi, can turn your existing site into a mobile site in seconds, while preserving the pictures, text and formatting of the original website. Moreover, existing sites, converted to mobile sites through code changes and plug-ins, can still be painfully slow and unresponsive. Sites optimized by .mobi are acknowledged to load and run on the fly.

So will .mobi really take off?

Despite the growth of mobile internet, there is still a wide spread public reluctance to employ the .mobi top level domain. Every day, more and more users are acclimatizing to handhelds and mobiles, but businesses and companies are far off from making a shift from conventional website design to a mobile one. What is your take on mobile web and its correlation with the .mobi domain?

I am sure in the future .mobi will take off as mobile internet is growing like crazy.

It will be perfect for newsblogs and game related sites.

It will take few more years to get everyone on mobile networks..In countries like India, only less than 10% people are using internet on mobile.

I think it will 2 more yrs to get into mobile world.

Do we really need a different TLD for mobile phones? Should the normal html be able to identify the device and change the layout accordingly.

Please keep in mind the fact that a new TLD will complicate things even further by increasing the issue of duplicate content and splitting the backlinks.

Will like to listen to your views about these issues.

I think that ,mobi is just a big failure just as .info or .travel is. If a website would want to make their pages to be available on mobile, that they could just change the html code of the page, and redesign it but not buy a .mobi domain.

I don’t think it’s really taken off at all, or that it will in the future. Most websites are just using their standard domain and offering a mobile version, or even providing that at domain.com/mob or similar.

However, I do think that good one words – media, photos, video etc .mobi are very valuable and will be popular enough. Then again my only experience with purchasing .mobi is probably the dumbest name ever purchased in that TLD.

Maybe this is a trend for personal websites but I wonder wether the media websites or business websites might go for special editions of their products via creating such domain; for example bbc.mobi?

The difference between mobi TLD and others probably is the channel dependency. I wonder if it was a good decision to link the TLD with channels :) In my opinion, the same regular domain name should ideally support multiple devices (either via explicity subdomains, links or automatically)

Do we have any other example like .mobi?

I am of same opinion as Lax above. In my country too the use of internet on mobile is nt so widely spread yet. Although recently one provider started to get the prices for mobile internet down, the buzz is not yet propagated.

I dont find the .mobi cool too. However as any extension if it is mixed up with some proper keywords it can sound cool :-)

I think the issue lies with perception. .com and .net have always been the premier domain names to go for, and it’s not likely to change, ever. Not .info, not .ws, not .mobi, not any other domain.

Basically, the problem with .mobi not being accepted to a great level is that people have started using their own domain names intelligently! .Mobi was released focusing for mobile website designs, but people have started having the mobile sites designed on their own domains with the “m” hostname CNAME entries.

If there is a mobile naming standard emerging, it is employing the brand of the original site, and putting a different prefix.

A domain name is part of the brand, switching between .com (or .ca or .co.uk) and .mobi is not an easy switch for consumers – and, given that .mobi could be a completely different owner, it’s not always ideal for consumers, either.

Thus, the emerging standard is a replacement prefix for the tired old “www”. I have seen mobile. or m., and in the case of a larger media site that optimizes for more than one standard, I’ve seen iphone. or bb. used as prefixes to the standard website domain.
