gTLD.com is so 90’s! Or that is what the advocates of .sex top level domain would say once .sex becomes fully implemented.

ICANN’s opening up of domain name extensions to anything imaginable was surely going to revolutionize the domaining world; and approval of the .sex gTLD is set to spark a domain name boom. Expansion of the short list of the current domain names, such as, .com, org, etc, will allow for any possibilities… from generic extensions, such as .food, to steamy names, such as .sex.

ICANN has spent a fortune on materializing this expansion program, therefore, do not expect the new gTLDs to cost anything less than a fortune to yourself. Recent estimates put the fees for obtaining the new gTLDs to around $100,000. These high initial figures will allow ICANN to recoup its costs in a short time.

    Trademark Issues?

Trademark domain TLDs, such as, .coke, .pepsi, etc will be bought and owned by the companies, however, more generic names, such as, .car, .beer, etc, will be put under the hammer; a scenario that will most probably create a bidding war to ICANN’s advantage.

    Over to you…

Do you think .com be finally dethroned? Please post your comments.

Personally I think some of the proposed extensions are a joke, especially those that only brands will have. Also, if ICANN introduce ‘.car’ and ‘.beer’ and similar extensions, it would, in my opinion, leave the domain world in ruins. No one would ever be able to remember all the different extensions, which would leave to massive losses of type in traffic and also great confusion.

That said, the idea of a ‘.sex’ or ‘.xxx’ would be great, especially if the browsers added in a plugin where you couldn’t access those extensions. That’d be great for parental control and that sort of thing :)

Thanks for the reply, Simon. Yes, too many extensions will make ICANNs regulation work more difficult. It can be chaotic! ;)

I only hope that somebody wouldn’t malign my brand image by registering a .sex extension to my domain name (minus com) LOL

The only solution, then, is….ummm…go and grab all those extensions imaginable :D
But seriously thinking, the high price tag of owning gTLDs will surely deter people from copyright infringements.

Your posts are always really interesting, and I actually get kind of sucked in. Who new domain names were so interesting? As far as .sex goes, I think it would be great for separating the adult content from the general commercial content.

I agree with Simon, however, in that having .pepsi, .coke, .papajohns or whatever would cause chaos. There’s really no reason for them to have brand name extensions, except the novelty value. There are only so many extensions we can make before people get fed up with trying to remember things.

Wow, Corey Freeman is back on my blog. Thanks for the comment; I always appreciate your insightful comments that liven up the discussion.

I also agree with you and Simon on the confusion all these gTLDs would cause. The current system is working fine; why mend something when it ain’t broken? ICANN could have done better, whereby, instead of making the generic TLDs public, they could have just kept a closed system, in which individuals and organizations could apply for their brandable or trademark TLDs and ICANN approve it on a case by case basis.

    Hey Forsaken,
    I will say NO!
Even my gran or teachers in school who are planning to retire knows in their mind that internet is only about.com. If you tell them a url, they will just record it as .com

Hey YingHang, thanks for commenting and welcome to my blog :)
I also agree with your comment, .com has become a “type-in” TLD…in fact, many people just know the internet by the name .com ;)

It would be awesome if they had .sex or .xxx or something like that as Teenius said. Porn sites would go crazy over them and it would allow people to know for sure that domains with extensions like that are pornographic sites.

I bet that such domains will be expensive somehow. Look for the new but as for ‘.sex’ or ‘.xxx’ it’s good idea to list them under one TLD so they can be easily blocked for the sake of parental controling.

It’s scary how such content is spreading not only via spamming comments (blogs/forums) but via social networks too (twitter for example)

A .sex domain? I think that this kind of domain will never become approved by ICANN.

I don´t think so. The .sex domains are not interesting for business people.
