There have been much debates, for or against the introduction of .tel top level domain (TLD) by Telnic. The .com followers have simply labeled it as another failure trying to stake its claim in the .com kingdom. Others, less moderate, have questioned the feasibility of introducing another domain extension which serves no purpose other than provide contact information.

My previous blog entry, Why .tel?, outlines some uses of this new TLD as well as its acceptance in the domaining arena. This post, of a two part series, attempts to provide reasons as you why a business or an individual needs to register a .tel domain name.

Before I elaborate on the reasons, let me define what a .tel domain is. Fact is, many people, even seasoned webmasters, think of .tel as just another domain extension under which you can host a website or blog. I have had to explain the real use of .tel on various threads in several webmasters forums. Tel is not your average domain extension. The .tel TLD allows you to store, publish and update online, all your contact information and keywords under your unique domain name, without the need for a website.

Why should you consider .tel for your business establishment?

Create and Control your Communications Hub

The .tel enables you to create a fully interactive and live communications hub to take control over how and where customers communicate with you. Using Yourbusiness.tel, you can publish all your means of communication, for example: phone, mobile, fax, premium numbers, VoIP and IM handles and email addresses. You can also store web links, geo-location data and keywords describing your business.

Join the Only, Real-Time, Global Directory

Yourbusiness.tel offers you an entry into the first global directory, allowing you to own and control all your contact information and update it in real-time whenever you wish. By contrast to existing directory services that are highly fragmented and very expensive, the .tel provides worldwide coverage, full control and real-time updating for only a fraction of the cost.

Effectively Route Customers to appropriate Departments and Locations

Yourbusiness.tel allows you to easily route customers to the department or location of their choice using a quick and intuitive navigation structure based on innovative DNS technology.

    Increase Online Discoverability

Yourbusiness.tel increases your business’s discoverability online by allowing you to publish multi-lingual keywords for each department and location. These keywords are indexed by leading search engines, which improves your online visibility.

Connect with your Customers from any Device

Yourbusiness.tel makes your business or brand instantly accessible from any device connected to the internet. Your customers simply type in Yourbusiness.tel into a browser, select a method of contact and click to initiate communication.

    Gain an Effective Mobile Presence

Yourbusiness.tel is optimized for mobile devices since it uses small and fast DNS lookups rather than pulling traditional website and html content. It therefore enables you to be quickly and easily found on all mobile devices.

    Live Update Anytime, Anywhere

Yourbusiness.tel may be easily updated in real time from any device connected to the internet through a user-friendly interface.

Incorporate Premium Numbers for Voting and Betting Services

A business could use their .tel to easily set up, integrate and manage time-sensitive tasks such as SMS voting for a favorite TV show with one-click functionality.

Generate Advertising and Sales Revenue under Generic Domain Names

A business could also use the .tel for services that are based on generic names: hotels.tel, plumber.tel, insurance.tel, locksmith.tel, etc. Each .tel domain could easily have multiple sub-domains for navigation to local providers or specialists.

    Drive Traffic to E-commerce Storefronts

A business could use the .tel to offer storefront services and collect micro-payments for downloads, products or services. For example: an artist’s site can provide news, chats, or downloadable mobile content such as MP3s or ringtones.

The above ten points basically cover the reasons as to why a .tel domain is essential for you; as a business or an individual entity. The next part of this series will attempt to describe how .tel is different from all other domains as well as outline more advantages of registering this new TLD. Your comments, once again, would be very much appreciated :)

Farrhad, I was not too keen with .tel when it was introduced. However, with the research and compilation of this blog entry, I came to realize that it is not so bad after all. .Tel may just become a great communication tool for businesses and individuals alike.

Hmm… somehow my mind still is stuck with com/net/org  even .info etc didn’t even pass my mind.

However, .tel seems to have a different purpose altogher but .dir would have been the ideal extension for this purpose?

Thanks a lot for a unique post, forsaken :)

Interesting!!! .tel eh – Something I’ll have to look into for my sites – at least you would want to have it simply to snap up the domains so that no one tries to impersonate you or something!!

Hi Ajith, till now the general perception has been that domains are something purely associated with creation and uploading of websites. Tel is different, I guess that is the reason for its slow acceptance.

Taris, that is an interesting opinion. Sunrise applications were intended to overcome this issue.

Thanks for taking the time to look into this – we very much appreciate it. And for all of your readers – and other domainers out there – you can get a free trial .tel domain to test the functionality for yourself by popping over to http://www.telnic.org/vip. You won’t be able to keep it forever, but you will be able to check the functionality against the points outlined in the article above.

    Thanks again!

I’m like Ajith. I generally stick with the .com/.net/.org and have only recently obtained .info and .biz names.

I hadn’t even considered getting a .tel. Thanks for the info. And at the least, it is a good idea to get it should it be useful in the future. After all, you wouldn’t want someone else to pick it up.

Thanks for your review. I note your comment about use of sub-domains to generate revenue. The Acceptable use prohibits use of extended names if a charge is made for the extended name to another party. It seems you are suggesting something different here with sub-domains?

I like it. Template driven, based on KISS model (keep it simple stupid), easy to use, no hosting fees, designed for mobile phones, and info can be privatized as well. Instead of giving out my number, email, website; I just give my .tel
