Picking up the right domain name
-
Yeah, yeah, its easy! Just go to your favorite registrar’s website, enter a few details (side note…the word “FEW” is not applicable to Godaddy in this context), and presto; you got a domain name registered. In your face Richeal!!! My first blog entry, and I have already failed miserably.
Or have I?Ok brainiacs, before you think that choosing the RIGHT domain name is so easy, read this article. I am sure that this blog post will change your perception on the RIGHT steps in registering a RIGHT domain name. So here I go…
Take for example, you are running a business “THE DAMN BEST WEBHOSTING COMPANY”. Will you go ahead and use your business name to register the domain? In many cases yes..But in many right cases, NO! A lot more thought and comprehension is needed.
Think of registering a domain as buying a new mansion with all your life saving, bank loan, and the few pennies in the jar…combined. Think of it as your property. Once you acquire it, you have to stick with it till the very end. Mess it up; and either you are on the streets, or if lucky getting three square meals in jail. Same with domain names. Register a wrong domain, get ready to be acquainted with a life of miserableness and of course banging on the desk and swearing your heart out.
Type in Traffic
Choose a domain name that is easy for people to remember. Type in traffic usually accounts for a significant percentage of hits. Take this scenario, E-bay. If you want to go to the E-bay website, what would you type? ebay.com in the browser address bar, right? Now imagine if ebay’s URL was “thebestauctionbuyingandsellingwebsite.tld”. Would you type that in the address bar? Going back to my first case, would you type thedamnbestwebhostingcomany.tld? If I am an average person, I would not! If say a million average people do not type the above to reach this website, what would happen? Yes, you guessed right…”THE DAMN BEST WEBHOSTING COMPANY” just lost a million type in traffic. However, if the domain was shortened to something such as, webhosting.tld, bestwebhosting.tld or similar, people would find it easier to remember and type in the domain name.
Select a domain and stick with it
Nowadays, domain names have become so cheap to register that you can literally purchase hundreds of names without affecting your budget. A dot com would cost you anything between $2.00 to $15 dollars. Hell, Its even cheaper than the daily pocket allowances of some kids. I brought this up for one reason. Just recently, my friend started a website and initially registered a domain. Later on, he realized that the domain name did not rightly describe his website, so he registered another domain and ditched the first one. When I heard of his actions, I was dumbfounded. Just imagine the volume of “type in traffic” he must have lost. He even cared less to leave the initial domain parked on his website. Imagine if eBay changes it name to fbay. There would be a lot of confused people around. Similar concept applies here, but on a smaller scale. The moral is, pick up a domain name and stick with it.
Domain name selection choices
If you are an organization, the first and obvious choice is your organization name. However, this is not always the wisest choice. Reason is my earlier illustration of thedamnbestwebhostingcomany.tld. It would be a horrible name indeed. Another is the “double letter in the domain” issue. What if Richaels Supermarket uses its company name as the domain? the double “s” here can cause some issues. Should the domain be registered as richaelssupermarket.tld or richaelsupermarket.tld? This will obviously confuse your type in traffic.
SEO and domain names
Search engine’s no doubt account for the largest percentage of website traffic when compared to any other methods. And Google is the strongest player in this game. Therefore, if your website is focused on a very specialized area, its always a good idea to give extra consideration in including the keyword somewhere in your domain name. Google and MSN usually take a look at the domain name when “spidering” a website, so it adds an extra bonus to your keyword ranking process.
Now the “constructive” myth
A domain name should have a .com TLD…period! This is a myth that takes a stronghold on some new webmasters as well as some established ones too. While this argument holds no water from a SEO point of view, having a .com TLD has its own advantages. Realistically speaking, a very very very large percentage of internet users have no idea on SEO, SE ranking, domaining, etc. For most of them, Google is internet. Others (type in traffic) would just end any domain names with a .com TLD. In simple terms, whenever someone thinks of a site, they have a tendency or are mentally conditioned to end it with a .com. While other extensions offer you greater chances of getting your domain name choice, they may not always get you the traffic. You may loose most of your traffic to the .com counterparts.
After reading this article, you may realize that registering the RIGHT domain is not a series of simple steps. It takes a lot of consideration in order to propel your website to greater heights. If you think otherwise, feel free to comment so. If you agree with my entry, or have some valuable inputs of your own, please include them in your comments too.

Great one.
It’s really amazing, the potential of domain names and how people make silly choices. Choosing a good domain name (I did not use the word perfect) is VITAL for a business success. You’ve to keep in mind a lot of things, including the future visitor, your brand name and more.
Ignoring those would mean choosing a bad name. The post would serve as a great guide mate

Thanks for the comment Swastik. You were right not to use the word “perfect” domain, as nothing of this sort exists. But you can always choose a good domain.
No matter how simple and short a domain is, if you ignore the basic steps, the domain automatically qualifies as a “bad” one.

You have made a great first post, Richael! Wow, I never knew alot of these tips. Thanks for writing this post!
Yes, it’s sad that choosing a good domain name isn’t the easiest task. Also because many of the good domains are taken up like http://www.bestwebhost.com (click that link and tell me if its the best.
)
You said that .coms can go for $2. Well, one question: where can you find such .coms? Most are $7.99-$9.99.

Thanks for the comment Wong. Most good domain names are taken up, that is a good point. However, if you read my final section of the article, having a .com in order to succeed is a myth. (but a “constructive” myth)
The regular price for .com’s are usually $6.00 up, however, there are some promotions occasionally in which you can grab a .com for as low as a dollar or two. A recent one was Godaddy’s coupon code where the .com domain could be registered for $2.19.

@Richael: yup, all good domains (at least the majority of them) are either parked (damn you, SEDO!), unused or misused
Another good thing to remember is that when buying a domain name, it is advisable to register it for more than one year. It has been said that those domains registered for one year only are caught under Google’s Sandbox.
Don’t know if this is a fact, though…

@Ikki, to add to that, yeah, some huge potential domain names (I say worth $XXXXX) are being misused very badly. Some of the premium names still have web 1.0 style, or even notepad HTML coded pages :p
BTW, I thing its a complete myth that Google sandboxes domains registered for one year.
Thanks for the comments

Great post!
@ wong: hahaha do they have any clients? :p

Thanks for the compliment Farrhad. My first post is receiving a lot of positive feedbacks
As to your question, bestwebhost were really lucky to pick up that domain in 1998 (Check the who.is record for it). Its a decade and no significant progress has been made by this company (as evident by their alexa rankings).
Just imagine what we could have done with a premium domain name like that…
November 18, 2008 am30 4:18 pm
@Ikki, I take my earlier statement back. SE’s in fact do favor domains registered for longer than 1 year. This shows the SE’s that the website is intended for a long time development and not something used for spamming and similar, short time “unethical” purpose.

I welcome you and hope to provide you with more interesting articles.
I had a look at your Thinkpads blog and you doing a marvelous job there. Its very heroic of you to specialize in such a narrow niche and I applaud you for that. Hope to see you around, as I will definitely be checking out your blog.

Great article. The great thing about my domain is that even though it’s .me I cater to the webmaster crowd. So it’s not as much as a problem. Also, webjourney.com is just a parked domain so if my users type that in they will probably be confused and do a Google search.
I have a question, is http://www.thecomplete(topic).com okay. Or do you think people will forget to easily.

Type-in traffic is a joke and probably something not even worth considering when picking a domain name. Yes, if your name is super long and hard to remember you probably won’t do much business whether you are a website or a brick and mortar store, as you should in your example. Lets say ebay couldn’t get their dot com name exactly, but instead registered ebayauctions.com by adding a generic descriptor to their name. I would bet they would be just as successful as they are today.

Yes I do agree with what you say and even though quite some time has lapsed when you posted your article its content is so much relevant and will always be.The same goes with your favorite car, take the case of Ferrari, now if it had some long name you would definitely shorten it so to make it easy to pronounce, wouldn’t you?
Shorter attractive names stay long as it saves the visitors time in typing it in the address bar,is easy to remember and pronounce
