The most Expensive Domain Names
-
Recently, toys.com was auctioned for $5.1 million dollars; domaining experts have stated that the domain could have been sold multiple times more than this value if the auction had taken place outside of the current worldwide economic recession.
Why so much?
Generic words, such as “toys”, “books”, etc are worth so much when bundled as a domain name because of its keyword value. These words are searched for multiple thousands and millions of times daily by users. This, consequently, converts in huge traffic to these domains.
The most expensive domains list and their values
1. Fund.com, $9.99 million
2. Porn.com, $9.5 million
3. Diamonds.com, $7.5 million
4. Toys.com, $5.1 million
5. Vodka.com, $3 million
6. CreditCards.com, $2.75 million
7. Computers.com, $2.1 million
8. Seniors.com, $1.8 million
9. DataRecovery.com, $1.66 million
10. Cameras.com, $1.5 million
10. Tandberg.com, $1.5 million
Now lets discuss something that has astounded domainers time and again. Billion dollar companies spend millions on TV and print ads every year but never realize the potential of investing in a generic domain name, as Toys ‘R’ Us has done with toys.com. Of course, offline adverts bring in far more business to the companies, however, a one time investment in domain names will definitely multi-fold the revenue for the company.
Your say?
Why do you think companies are hesitant to make an investment towards acquiring generic domains for their online presence?

Hey, nice post, really well written. You should write more about this. I’ll definitely be subscribing.

I think a couple of those domains will be an amazing investment for the future as well. Like you say, Toys’R'Us will probably make that $5.1m back pretty soon from online sales, in which case the domain will well be worth it. But the thing is that domains will (probably) never disappear, so it will be recurring income!

Hi Simon, you made a valid point. Advertisements and promotions will only last a while and you need to come up with something interesting each time around. On the contrary, once you get the domain, that is yours and you can build your image around it as long as you want.

These names are kind of self explanatory in terms of their valuations as any good short and crisp names related to finance, digital stuff, porn, gambling and alcohol will sell
. Wonder where things like food.com has gone which used to be hot a few years ago.
(What do you think about DollarShower?)

Ajith, dollarshower seems to be a good name and in my estimation, can fetch anything around low $xxxx. But yeah, these generic dictionary names will continue to be valuable in the domaining industry.

I’m genuinely surprised that porn.com is not number one on this list. I’m not even sure what the purpose of fund.com would be. Banking, I suppose?

I also believed that either sex.com or porn.com was the most valuable domain name before I got hold of this list. The prices are in pre-economic crisis times, by the way.

Lex, I am not sure of what Tandberg means myself. But the site has to do something with Video conferencing solutions, Telepresence etc. Maybe the domain sold for that price just because of the site contents

The funny thing is that these companies spend a lot of cash for the domain name, but don’t provide quality content. Then, some other site ends up stealing the traffic.

There are a lot of registrars that charge around $10, or free with purchase. But who has the MOST EXPENSIVE domain registration on the net? And I’m not talking about pre-registered domains.
