New Fees puts an end to Domain Tasters

Gone are the days when domain tasters used to take benefit of the five day domain registration grace period to register domain names for spam, scams, and cyber-squatting. ICANN used to charge a measly 20c for new domain registrations, which was not refundable in the event of domain cancellation. This did not deter the domain tasters to register domain names in bulk, gain advantage of it for the duration of the grace period and then discard them before they could be billed.

However, with ICANN upping the penalty to $6.75 for unusual domain cancellations during the grace period, this trend has spiraled downwards, and for the better.

    What is “domain tasting”?

Once a domain name is undergoing a registration process, there is an option to “add grace period”, which is offered by some domain registrars. This 5 day grace period allowed registrants to drop “mis-registered” domains. “Domain tasters” took advantage of these 5 free days to grab domain names in bulks, gain monetary value from it and then withdraw the registration before the bill was due.

Domain tasters used to make money from this practice with practically zero upfront investment. Bulk mistyped domain names were registered, and in many case, cybersquatted. All of these mistyped domain names used to drive people to the same website which used to contain advertising and even phished links to confuse the visitors in differentiating the current website from a legitimate one. Moreover, some domain tasters tracked the domain name availability search done by people, registered these domain names themselves and offered it to the public at a higher price.

    ICANN’s response…

ICANN eventually responded by imposing rules that would make certain that domain tasters ended up with a sizable bill. ICANN began to identify people making bulk registrations and premature registration withdrawals, and only allowed them to cancel 10% of their registrations. Anything above that and the registrant has to pay $6.75 fee for each domain name cancelled.

The domino effect of this new regulation has been spectacular. With the new penalties taking effect, there has been a marked decrease in domain tasting. People have even gone to claim that the “end of domain tasting” has come.
I believe this move by ICANN was excellent and well timed, especially when we are so near to the opening of registration of generic TLD’s to the public. What do you think?

People tend to misuse a service to the extent of it getting out of their hands for ever.People could have really utilized this 5 day grace period for making more money and the finally going “online”.But short sightedness bears fruit only once.
Domain Tasters as the name suggests really did what their name implied, just tasted the pie to leave it uneaten in full.Their loss completely :)

I am so confused, how did anyone ever get away with this? I work with Buy Domains (consultant only), but I had no idea anyone could do this.

    Thanks again,

I’ve never heard of domain tasting and I would say that it’s fiendishly clever except for its purpose. To Don’s point above, shortsightedness again rules the day. What if they put effort into a tactic that would bear fruit long-term, without junking up the web?

The good thing about Dynadot is that there is no minimum purchase required to utilize the grace deletion function. You can use this service with a single registered domain.

It’s about time ICANN stepped up and did something about domain tasters. I agree with those who say “The end of domain tasting has come” because this enforcement will definitely stop domain tasters right in their tracks.

Domain tasting is the practice of a domain name registrant using the five-day “grace period” at the beginning of the registration of an ICANN-regulated second-level domain to test the marketability of the domain.

Maybe you should consider selling your domain name. looks like people are making a lot of money these days doing just that. i read a CNN Money article just the other day about this website called http://wealth.to it looks like the domain such as this one is up for grabs for some hundred thousands of dollars… maybe you should think about doing the same.

Selling lucrative domains has always been a good way to make a profit for as long as the net’s been around for the public, that’s for sure. You just can’t go wrong with that if you know your domain’s worth a lot to someone.

    Till then,

    Jean

Nothing sucks more than a spam site when you mistype one of your favourite websites. Do they even generate revenue for the owners? Or have people become used to that “Mistyped” website type.

I am sure there are reputable players (for some value of reputable, at any rate) in that industry – and if so it’d be in their self interest to avoid kiting domains, and especially to avoid deliberately kiting or squatting on typo domains.
